ATSSs - Running on the Smell of an Oily Rag!
Day Centres running on the Smell of an Oily Rag
Students leaving regular high schools have several options. They can start their working life, go to TAFE, or go to University.
Many special school/special developmental school students have little option but to go to a “Day Activity Centre”, often called an ATSS (Adult Training and Support Centre).
Most of these centres run on the smell of an oily rag, and provide little more than very basic minder care – just somewhere to pass the time.
These centres are such a massive departure from special education schools, regular schools, TAFEs and Universities, as to be a disgrace to those who have so few needs to maintain and improve their quality of life in a real and meaningful way.
Quality of life is consistent and meaningful interaction, developmental and social activities, through active support – Person Centred Active Support
